South Mountain in south Phoenix is the largest city park in the USA. At 16,500 acres, it is 11 miles
across. This tiny patch of the Sonoran Desert is home to more than 150 animal species, 274 plant
species and two mountain ranges (the Ma Ha Tauk Range and the Guadalupe Range).
Petroglyphs echo the lives of people who lived in this harsh, arid environment. Ruins of stone
structures also speak of other people in another time.
There are petroglyphs almost everywhere you look, courtesy of the Hohokam Indians.
