Rocketed PX

This is our PX the morning after it and everything in it was destroyed by Viet Cong 122mm Rockets. Fortunately no one was hurt. See "A Sad Song" http://www.pbase.com/image/73580359

I have subsequently found out the vessel was YFU-78 and not as I stated..

I was stationed at Camp Tien Sha from June 1968-July 1969.,I was a BU3 attached to the US Naval Support Activities Danang...I lived in barracks #35 which was on the backside of Camp Tien Sha...I was in barracks #35 when the Rocket and mortar attack began...we had a material storage yard directly behind the barracks that was hit with incoming rounds...I also, as a builder, withessed damage to the Post Office, postal vehicles and the street..the PX as previously stated, a barracks where there were several injuries, and covered storage..our crew was first assigned to the removal of salvagable product from the PX..we were then moved to Covered Storage and began the clean up of the damaged reefer units and roofs..there was unexploded ammo througout the area and at one time I had a photo of a mortar round unexploded, impaled directly in the center of a reefer door..from there we were assigned the clean up of the Bridge Ramp area where the vessel was blown in half with one piece landind over 100 yds across the roadway from the explosion..If I remember correctly, at 67 that's a challege but I think the vessel was YF-79...I may be completely wrong on that number but that number comes to my mind...

I was on the perimeter behind the XXIV Hq. that night. Was quite the night. Dusters and Cobras and mortor rounds walking in front of my position. Lots of stereo stuff wrecked too.

I was in Nam 1968-69 with XXIV Corps Artillery HQ Battery. The PX building that was hit
had all the liquor and beer in it. Very colorful flames ! For awhile we had really bad
beer to drink until we took a convoy to Da Nang to get more. I'm from Illinois.

My name is Jena Haymes. I am just wondering if this was the blast that killed my uncle, Dick Haymes, and if any of you knew him. Thanks.

I was on guard duty at the entrance of 26th General Support Group right on QL1 the night
the PX got hit. I happened to be looking directly in the direction of the PX and PX warehouse (Butler building) when the first rocket hit. That's the only rocket I witnessed explode during my tour, there were plenty more rockets dropped on Phu Bai.
SPC 4 Inman and I scrambled for the small bunker next to the guard post. Srapnel from the 1st or 2nd rocket landed on top of the bunker. I kept that piece of shrapnel. Can't find it now.

In 69-70 the M-14 was a much better weapon of choice for the engineers.....when ammunition was scarce, it made a much better club than the M-16.

Small correction: That was a RUSSIAN 122mm rocket launched by the VC. On one of the few days I was back at home station, one destroyed the hooch across the street from ours at 0347 and I got a very close look at the warhead mating ring with cyrillic lettering describing the provenance of the round that embedded in the wall a foot from my bunk.

These photo.s are bringing back a flood of memories, some good - some not so good. This shot reminds of the morning that the mess hall @ Pleikeau (sp?) was rocketed and destroyed just a few moments after the last person left.

Carrying a 14 that late in the war.

Yep, lucky indeed. These 122 mm rockets can have quite an impact.
