Four-spotted Skimmer (Libellula quadrimaculata)

One of the five common "King Skimmers" in Wisconsin. This is a common species at still waters throughout Wisconsin, often returning repeatedly to the same hunting perch. A medium-sized dragonfly with (1) orange and black abdomen with yellow side-spots, (2) orange along the leading edge of all wings, (3) small black patch at the hindwing bases, and (4) two black "dots" within the orange streaks on each wing. Juveniles are usually more brightly-colored than adults, which fade over time. The sexes are alike. No other species is similar.
