Sabaki Rivermouth

The Sabaki river is Kenya's second longest river beginning life as the Athi river near Nairobi on the edge of the Rift valley. Flowing east it becomes the Sabaki (also known as the Galana) river. Where the Sabaki meets the Indian Ocean there is a very productive mixed mosaic of freshwater & brackish wetland lagoons with scrub, mangroves, grassland & seasonally flooded grassland. This area, only 5 kilometres north of Malindi, is exceedingly bird-rich holding an interesting & highly varied range of waterbirds -many not found in other coastal areas of Kenya.

Numerous tern species, gulls, skimmers, storks, ibis, egrets, Lesser Flamingo (the only flock away from the Rift lakes) pelicans and of course a large range of waders can be found at Sabaki though wader numbers/variety are lowest in may-early august during the palearctic summer (when I visited!).

The images included here are record shots taken on a single half-day visit to Sabaki (7am-2pm) & should give an idea of what to expect -be assured the birding is phenomenal & Sabaki rivermouth is well worth a few visits.
