Despite the drowning, the crocs and death from misadventure the vast majority of wildebeest cross and re-cross the Mara without mishap. Witnessing the huge numbers of wildebeest in the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem it is clear that despite the attrition of the Great Migration this migratory behaviour clearly contributes to the success of wildebeest as a species.
