Casualties of the cold!

West Fife, Scotland

This has been our coldest Winter for many years!
I put out large amounts of ground-feed and fruit which attracted good numbers of thrushes -especially Blackbirds and Redwing, but despite this the cold claimed a number of casualties.
When the snow finally melted I found the corpses of 6 Blackbirds, 4 Redwings and two Song Thrush.
One of each is present in this image (these were corpses I found before the thaw!).

It's a tough life being a bird a lot of the time. I wondered how many would die over your cold European winter this year.

Great document Steve.
Quite odd that so many corpses of blackbirds...here in SW Finland we have had a very severe winter all the way from beginning of December without any mild period...so all blackbirds have been dependent on bird feeding...and managed well, no corpses - and now succesfully wintered males have already occupied the best places before the migrated males come back, not a bad tactics but it has been a tough work ;-)!

How sad! I wonder why they don't move south.
