African Blue Flycatcher (Elminia longicauda)

Tunku Bolong, Baobolong wetlands.

Also known as the Fairy Blue Flycatcher. In The Gambia this beautiful Monarch Flycatcher is very localised & specific in its habitat requirements. These birds seem to need undisturbed riverine forest -either freshwater Gallery forest or mature tall Mangrove forest.

It is a nightmare of a bird to get good images of as it never sits still and sticks to the shady under-storey. This image was taken from a boat. We sat for almost two hours under intense sun waiting for this bird. My wife got sunstroke and briefly passed out dropping her camera into the brackish water at the bottom of the boat -the camera instantly died!
(In my house "Fairy Blue Flycatcher" is now a metaphor for taking things too far!).
