This female is in a trance-like state which occurs during egglaying.
Leatherbacks are very sensitive to light & will abandon the nest or a nesting attempt if disturbed by light. Once laying commences however the turtles seem to completely ignore all that is going on around them & at this point they can be handled, tagged & photographed by flash without distress or disturbance.
