BS Cabin

Center sidings weren't commonly found along the C&O in great abundance. This is especially true in contrast to the N&W, whose Norfolk, VA to Portsmouth, OH mainline was littered with them. One of the few in Virginia was located on the west side of Covington. It stretches from the Meade Westvaco's Covington Mill to a large rock cut just west of town behind the Boys Home of Virginia, which has been located on nearby property for nearly 100 years. It was here the railroad established BS Cabin which guarded the west end of the 8,800' center siding. The BS designation was the telegraph code for the cabin that once stood here and is derived from the aforementioned Boys Home. A steel water tank was also once located here that supplied a water column between the westbound main and the siding. The water tank survived into the 21st Century but was torn down in recent years. On the morning of October 22, 2010 we are in position to witness Q302 charging upgrade about to enter the rock cut and through the interlocking. The classic triple track signal bridge was also a rare sight along the C&O in Virginia. While the name BS Cabin still survives, the C&O signals were all replaced in recent years by modern installations.
