In downtown Caretta, West Virginia there remains evidence of the N&W's Caretta Branch where a lone color position light signal still stands tall. Although it no longer protects the branch's junction with the Dry Fork Branch mainline, it serves as a reminder of a once thriving coal company town that boasted over 200 homes. The operation here was owned by a variety of companies throughout the 20th Century. One of those organizations was the Olga Coal Company who also owned the operation in nearby Coalwood, the setting of the 1999 movie "October Sky". Ultimately the tipple and processing plant in Caretta were closed in 1986. Interestingly enough, as of 2005 the signal was under power as one of it's red lights was still illuminated.
