Flat Top

Flat Top Sunrise - A loaded coal train pauses at Flat Top Yard to pickup additional loads of coal destined for Lambert's Point in Norfolk, VA. The train is actually straddling the VA/WV state line as it prepares to start the final ascent into Bluefield. Flat Top was one of three assembly yards the N&W maintained in the early 20th Century between Bluefield and Iaeger, WV to handle the enormous amount of coal traffic that originated in the area. The other two yards were located farther west at Eckman and Kimball, the latter of which was abandoned many years ago. This scene was captured on October 19, 2009.
