Hawai'ian Botticelli Falling

Honolua Bay, Maui, Hawaii view map

I was surprised to see that, at least on this particular day, almost all of the surfers at this beach were women... the local pineapple/juice cart guy told me that there's a pretty big women's competition held here each year... so it sort of makes sense. This woman was a very good surfer and I would not be surprised to know if she's a competitor. The actual bay is great to photograph surfers because it is shaped as a pretty tight horse-shoe and that means that you can photograph the surfers easily from the side (or even from behind) from either the rocks or tall cliff on either side of the horseshoe, rather than head-on (as is the case in this photo). This makes for more interesting photos in a lot of cases.
