The Mechanics of Evolution

Amazing what millions of years of evolution will come up with.

From watching the bee feed on this flower it seemed pretty clear to me that the flower has evolved a mechanism which allow a bee to "press" deep into the flower when it is feeding. When the bee pushes it's head into the flower, a "pad" on the flower pushes into the back of the bee allowing it to get some traction or possibly keeping it there longer -- maybe to pick up more pollen?

Thanks for the comment. But I think that this weeks swine flu virus would probably strongly disagree with you.

Awesome photos! I'm thinking of picking up the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens for my EOS 50D for shooting bugs and flowers.

I have to point out that I do disagree with your statement on evolution. Remember evolution is a theory not a fact. This theory pertains life gains entirely new information over time. This has not yet been proven while adaptation using existing gene information has.

Nice detail and thanks for the amazing nature lesson.

See all those bits of pollen in the bee's fur? This is evolutionary symbiosis. This is pollination. In this species of flower, the pollen is effectively licked off. It's very naughty. ;p
