I had an unexpected opportunity to return to the Galapagos Islands. There were a few challenges, but we saw lots of great stuff, pretty much everything on the "checklist." Because we went to see big animals (whale sharks, schools of hammerhead sharks, ...), and because the conditions can be difficult with current and surge, I did not even take the macro port or the strobes. Strobes are not permitted for the sharks and whale sharks anyways, to help minimize our impact. Available light underwater photography tends to produce a blue cast on everything, so I found myself converting most shots to black and white. I think I classify myself as an impressionist photographer (I post-process the image so it looks like what I remember reality looking like, similar to the Impressionist painters, who went home and painted their impression, rather than trying to capture it "live"), and black and white seems to be most successful in expressing my impression.
