Kenya & Uganda - Oct 2009

This series is from my second trip to Africa (though some may say it's first trip to the real "TIA" Africa). I spent an invigorating and inspiring month with FACES in Suba district of Kenya, bordering beautiful lake Victoria. Then against my better judgment, I took several days on freezing, foggy, sleeting, muddy Mount Kenya. After that it was a week in Uganda for whitewater rafting in the Niles, gorilla tracking in Bwindi, and relaxing on lake Bunyonyi.
My favorite part of the trip were the people I photographed and the friends I made. At the risk of generalizing - East Africans are some of the nicest people I've ever met. It was a mental disconnect - between these wonderful people and the extreme poverty, the rampant corruption, the childhood mortality, the ethnic violence, the fierce tribalism that play out on the national headlines each day. I left with more questions than answers.
This is the first time where I moved away from my SLR. The rainy season was not friendly to the Rebel XTI, my aging workhorse. Almost half of the pictures were taken with the pocket-friendly Sony WX1. Post-processing these JPG files was a nightmare and some still retain a off-balanced color cast. But, you have no picture if you have no camera.
