20022006 dilemma

dad: we had a review with the vet today. Pooch's allergies have not been brought under
control using the antihistamines and other measures since they were diagnosed last August
and he is still having a lot of problems with sore and inflamed eyes and itches everywhere.
The vet has suggested putting Pooch on long term steroid treatment to control the
allergies by suppressing his immune system. This can cause side effects like weight
gain and liver damage so the wife and I are hugely against the idea. But the vet feels
Pooch is suffering unnecessarily with the level of allergic reaction he has at the moment.
For those who don't remember, he was diagnosed with sixteen different allergies including
a very severe flea allergy. We're considering the options but are all feeling quite depressed
and discouraged today, so here's a shot of happier times from last week's holiday.

Poor PoochFamily! That is a tough choice to have to make. One question: have you searched online for alternative-medicine/holistic therapies? There's and MD here who's gung-ho on integrative medicine (conventional and alternative together). He has an extensive web-site and I've found lots of help not only for myself, but for problems with our beasts (3 dogs, 2 cats), as well. Best of luck to all of you no matter what route you choose. I suspect, Dad, that you & Mum suffer as much--in your own way--as Pooch.

Pooch, what a trouper you are! No sign of your misery in your photos. I can't think of anyone who deserves this less than you.

I'm sure the vet will monitor the steroids carefully. They are a miracle drug when they are needed.

Poor little Pooch, it is a tough decision to make. Will be wishing for him to magically grow out of the allergies! This is a lovely shots of a very happy lucky dog.

Poor Pooch.. there always is the option of short term trial to see how much Pooch would improve on steroids. Then, you weight that improvement compared to long term complications. It is a tough decision. Cute picture, Poochmum!
