Byland - the refectory

The Cistercian monks who lived here would have initially followed the Rule of St Benedict, which stated that monks should eat only one
meal a day and that meat should not be served. By the 14th century, meat was reguarly served and the luxury of an abbot's table
rivalled that of the tables of the other powerful nobles and dignitaries.
