A study in contrasts these two: ruins of two medieval monasteries, one in North Yorkshire in what is now an affluent and sparsely populated area of small villages, woodland and farms;
the other in a densely populated area of South Yorkshire beset by crime and poverty.
At Byland, the once magnificent church is the most intact part of the site; at the former Priory of St Mary Magdalene of Lund near Monk Bretton, only the floor plan of the church remains but the Prior's private apartments are fairly intact.
