Byland - tessellated floor

The remains of this tessellated floor were photographed in what was once a side chapel on the south side of the church, but originally the entire church had a tessellated floor.
This type of floor was very fashionable in the 12th and 13th centuries and would once have been brightly coloured and very intricate -
a striking and memorable sight in the church.
