This mine was the most prosperous in the area, employing 398 people in its heyday. It was begun in the eighteenth century to extract tin,
but was later used for the mining of arsenic and copper. The mine closed in 1895, unable to compete with cheaper imports from abroad.
Over 7000 people were employed in mining in the Tamar Valley area in the boom years of the 1860s and the area has now been
designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After work ceased to be available in the mines, many of the mining families emigrated to North America and Australia.
