Gallery Fifty Eight: Man and nature -- expressing our relationship with the environment

Man and his technology leaves a mark on the natural world, for better and for worse. Environmental factors now play an ever more critical role in our own lives, whether we choose to acknowledge them or not. In this gallery, I demonstrate ways of using our cameras to imply and express ideas about the fragile and challenging relationships between man and the natural world. Almost everywhere we look, even in the most pristine environments, the hand of man is present, and available for photographic exploration and interpretation.

I launch this gallery with an initial portfolio of 17 images made in California’s Yosemite National Park and in the mining towns that served the great Gold Rush of 1849. I hope to gradually add more significant examples of imagery based on the relationships between man and nature as I travel elsewhere.

I present this gallery, as usual, in "blog" style. A large thumbnail is displayed for each image, along with a caption explaining how I intended to express my ideas. If you click on the large thumbnail, you can see it in its full size, as well as leave comments and read the comments of others. I hope you will be able to participate in the dialogue. I welcome your comments, suggestions, ideas, and questions, and will be delighted to respond.
