Concentration, Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Denver, Colorado, 2007

I was drawn to the incongruous juxtaposition featured in this mural – the array of colorful birds seem at odds with the soulful expression of the woman. I saw this mural as a background context and photographed numerous festival patrons walking in front of it, including this woman in the white shirt. Just as she passed into the space between the birds and the sad looking woman, I was able to create another juxtaposition. I was delighted to see this woman raise her hand to her face, as if she was lost in thought. Her raised arm matches the angular flow of the arm of the woman behind her. She never sees the mural that we see. The image becomes a story of concentration, doubt, and introspection.

She may well be on the phone, Charu. I, too, would love to see her expression. But that is the power of abstraction at work -- it forces the viewer to use his or her imagination to see the missing details. Thanks for enjoying this juxtaposition gallery -- the stories behind these images are often intensified by what we can't see, and can only imagine.

I thought she was on the phone too... the stark white of her dress contrast every well with the deep tones of the mural while the color of her hair perfectly matches it... I wonder what the expression on her face was at that time...? (This is my favorite gallery from all yours - the stories - real and imagined - behind each of the photographs here are truly wonderful!)

Thanks, Ceci, for imagining a phone to her ear. It could be. Or it could be just an illusion. She might well be pressing her hand to her face in thought or concern. I see a person under great pressure. As I noted in the caption, she seems to be concentrating, has doubts and is deep in thought. The context provided by the ironic painting behind her intensifies all of these emotions. The hair is indeed a perfect match for the color of the painting, creating still another irony -- se takes no notice of what she seems to almost belong to.

I like the colors, movement and artwork in this photo, and what could be someone feeling forlorn and raising a hand to wipe at her eyes; but I think instead that she's on the phone, given the ubiquity of these tiny devices. Even so, because her face is totally covered, there could be all sorts of translations as to what's going on here, and she might be caught in something that she's trying to escape from. There is a poignancy in her posture, her hidden face, and the tremendous sadness in the painted face which you have juxtaposed here, made all the more powerful by the bird portraits to the left, as though all that was needed was to lift off the ground and fly off to another place and time, and to leave whatever the painted lady is experiencing. I love the fact that the real woman's hair perfectly matches the background, seeming to integrate her into the picture without her knowledge.
