Ram alert, Sahara Desert, Morocco, 2006

There are many herds of sheep on the fringes of the Sahara. We stopped for one that filled the road before us. A alert group of rams with very large horns create a wall here to keep the other sheep in check. I also used a 750mm telephoto focal length to make this image – the rams were very far away, and I wanted to make them as big as possible. They were the subject of the picture and I needed detail to create the incongruous “wall of horns” that keep the rest of the sheep in line.

I think you are referring to this sheep dog image, Tim:http://www.pbase.com/image/35604280 You have a good memory of my photographs. I like your observation. In that photo, the sheep are protected by an ever alert dog. In this one, the sheep must protect themselves -- with the rams drawing heavy duty here. In each of these images, it is the juxtaposition of the alert and not so alert that makes the point.

I am reminded of an image of yours of a sheep dog who had much the same alert stance. Sheep, I guess, need protecting.
