Shadow play, Haynes, Arizona, 2006

My photographic style also stresses shadow play and geometry. I use the shadows of both line and curve here to complete the geometry of a vintage truck door. The shadows add an interpretive element symbolizing labor – the door handle becomes an incongruous sickle, while the long diagonal shadows of flowing lines represent bars of strength. This vehicle was used in agriculture, and even though I abstract it down to just a door, the shadows offers our imagination hints at its function.

Carol is a marvelous designer, Iris -- and she has helped me redefine my own approach to abstraction. There really is no such thing as "mundane" -- absolutely anything can seen in a fresh and often extraordinary way if we are able to redefine it as an expressive photograph. In this case, as you note, the interplay of light and shadow creates entirely new meanings.

Like Carol's abstractions, yours, too, have helped me look at things differently. Your interplay of shadow and line transforms the mundane into an imaginative composition.

Thanks, Carol. Your own photographic style often employs striking geometric design and thought provoking abstraction. Both of us will use our abstract style of shooting to bring beauty to an ordinary, or even ugly object.

I love abstract as you know, and your shadow distorted by the curvature is fascinating, and as you say, suggests a sickle. Elegantly composed shot!
