Saloon sculpture, Tortilla Flat, Arizona, 2011

This life sized wooden sculpture of a Native American chieftain stands outside the one saloon in this mountain crossroads hamlet. I was struck by the power of the detail brought out by the sculptor's chisel. I moved in very close to define the craftsmanship that went into this effort by emphasizing those key details that bring out the character of the piece. This image reveals traces of the paint that perhaps originally covered it. As the paint vanished, the craft emerges.

Thanks, Mo. One of my favorite idioms is "God is in the detail," which means details are the essence of the thing itself. That is why I put this gallery together. Thanks for observing the importance of the intricate detail here. (As for who originated this idiom, he or she remains anonymous. Some believe that the architect Mies van der Rohe first popularized it. Others feel that the credit should go to French novelist Gustave Flaubert. No matter who first said it, I have adopted this idiom as a cornerstone of my approach to photography.)

You can really see the intricate detail here.

Thanks, Rose -- the tool marks on the nose seem to extend it. But I see no strings attached.

I especially like the details on the nose, ala Pinocchio.
