Over and under, dolphins off Dominica, French West Indies, 2010

I stopped this pair of Frasers dolphins as one leaps and the other plunges at a shutter speed of 1,2500th of a second, using a long 400mm telephoto focal length. The animals were quite distant, making them very small in the frame. I cropped in on them, and changed the image from a horizontal to a vertical. I placed the animals in the upper half of the frame, and left a long panel of water below them to intensify the nature of their leap and the plunge.

Thanks, Carol -- timing in photography is a combination of previsualization and good fortune. I saw the pod of dolphins churning the waters in the distance, and pointed my long lens in that direction because I anticipated a lot of activity over there. I just kept shooting the activity, making many images, and then studied the results later on the computer. I only then could see what I had done here, and was able to enlarge the scene and change the proportions by cropping the image.

A shining example of great timing, Phil! The very fast exposure time has really helped make these guys freeze in mid-air, just at the perfect moment. Seems like your new GH2 is serving you very well especially with that 400mm lens.
