The road, Monument Valley, Arizona, 2009

Visitors enjoy Monument Valley’s ultimate vista from a hotel known appropriately as “The View.” It is an iconic view, burned into the American consciousness by the films of John Ford and the images of generations of landscape photographers. As evening descended upon the valley, I made my own version from the hotel parking lot, building my vista around the road that snakes into the distance and then vanishes into a gulch. Three cars can be seen here, adding a sense of scale incongruity to the vista. The color seems almost too rich to be true, begging me to tone it down, yet this rendering is very close to the colors I actually saw before me.

Thanks, Iris, for this poignant context. What originally began as a landscape becomes an unforgettable human document, etched in pain and suffering.

When I was standing at this vista point looking at this road, I saw it as a metaphor for a the 1864 event in Navajo history known as "The Long Walk" where the US Army relocated close to 10,000 Navajos. Their trek to an army internment sight was 300 miles long, done on foot. Approximately 200 died on that road. Four years later, the Navajo made their "Long Walk" home to this incredibly beautiful area that we enjoyed on this trip. The title you chose for this wonderful image is very symbolic.

Thanks for noting the trinities of buttes and cars here, Rose -- it is a whimsical concept, to be sure.

Three buttes and three cars, a great pairing of trios.

We could call them "nature's own triangles," Tim. Thanks.

I see two triangles here the first is the mountains the second is more subtle - the line of the road and the edge of the cliff which wiggles in the same way as the road.

The beauty, Alina, is the work of nature. All I did was to isolate and interpret what I saw by choosing this moment in time, light, and space.
