Portrait of a salesman, Tozeur, Tunisia, 2008

This image defines both the man and his task. He dresses in local costume, in order to seem more exotic to the tourists he awaits. He is relaxed, yet also calculating, poised to strike. He casually holds a glass of tea in one hand, as to imply that he is approachable and hospitable. Behind him are his wares, extending from the deep recesses of his shop out into the street itself. He has blocked the sidewalk as well – making it hard for anyone to get around him. You can see him in action at http://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/106453101 .

What appear to be pajamas are actually traditional Tunisian garments, Carol. Not everyone wears such clothing, so your guess seems correct. He probably dresses this way to catch the interest of curious tourists.

Well this gent looks like he's wearing his pajamas as he drinks his morning tea, so that might spark some interest with the tourists. Interesting shoes too!
