Portrait of a salesman, Tozeur, Tunisia, 2008
This image defines both the man and his task. He dresses in local costume, in order to seem more exotic to the tourists he awaits. He is relaxed, yet also calculating, poised to strike. He casually holds a glass of tea in one hand, as to imply that he is approachable and hospitable. Behind him are his wares, extending from the deep recesses of his shop out into the street itself. He has blocked the sidewalk as well – making it hard for anyone to get around him. You can see him in action at

Determined, Tozeur, Tunisia, 2008
The salesman portrayed earlier in this gallery (
http://www.pbase.com/image/106453100 ) spots his quarry and springs into action. He seems the essence of determination, -- jaw set, eyes narrowed, hand in motion, feet slipping softly forward. His target, a tourist in shorts, is following the most important rule for those who wish to avoid a sales pitch. He looks straight ahead, never making eye contact. He has already been forced to walk in the street – the sidewalk itself is blocked. The determined salesman appears willing to do all he can to stop this tourist in full stride, short of grabbing him. I’ve stopped them both forever here, even as they appear to be on a collision course. (You can guess how it came out.)

Passivity, Douze, Tunisia, 2008
This image could just as well be placed in my marketplace gallery, yet it also functions here, in this gallery on salesmanship. Sometime, the art of salesmanship is rooted in passivity. There is a code of etiquette in force at the weekly animal market in this small North African desert town, a method of selling based on tradition. This man in the shadows is probably the owner of these sheep and goats. He and his assistant remain as far away from them and his customers as he can, allowing the product to speak for itself. There is no hard sell. He will speak only when spoken to, and then he will speak with few words.
