GAFB Documentation Project - Artist's Viewpoint

This is a collection of photos that more closely represent the artistic view I've tried to formulate during my five years of making photographs of the former Air Force Base. I'm still very much on a journey of formulating an artistic vision, not to mention continuing to grow my technical skills. This has been my favorite venue for photography, and I'm sure I'll look back on this as a very important and formative time.

I was stationed at George twice first time in the 37 AGS yellow section and than I left and came back to the 37 EMS armament shop, the place had its ups and its downs but when Creech was TAC Commander he made us paint everything that ugly brown color which was known to us regular troops who did the labor as Creech brown

I worked in the 2067th Comm Sq as teletype repair. It was my first duty station after tech school (1971). It was a good place to be stationed and Norton AFB wasn't too far away as well as LA. Good Times!

I was stationed at George AFB for 3 months in 1950 with the 452nd Bomb Wing (L)when we
trained before going to the Korean War. It was a great base. Three of us from the 452nd
returned after 65 years to visit the place. It was so sad to see the utter devastation
that has taken place there. I couldn't believe it.

I was at George from 8/65 to 11/66 ( went to Vietnam)Assigned to 831st. Air police squadron k-9 section.

Was there in 67 in the A&E Squadron ECM shop. Loved the base and Victorville.

I was a crew chief on F4 phantoms at George Air Force from 1969-1973 with a tour of Takhli Thailand in between. I loved working on the planes and working with the pilots.I believe they were the bravest men I've ever met. Does anyone remember the hanger inn?. It was a great watering hole for us after working hours.Does anyone out there remember the place?. I know I lost a few brain cells in those days . I belonged to the 431st.fighter squadron under chief master Sergeant Essinger. I'd love too hear from someone.

Was there from 68-70 in aerospace ground equipment shop.So sad how it looks now.Pictures on web site bring back good memories.Had a great time.Retired 2006 after 40 years.Great career.

I was stationed at George AFB from 1975-1977 in Security Police. I really enjoyed my time there and also the local area.

I was at George fromMar 1965 to Sept 1968 when TDY but never to Viet nam , I worked transient Alert the whole time,

I had two tours at George 72-79, 82-85 retired from there and moved to Fl. We lived an Texas,Mass Circle and Idaho. Retired as NCOIC Base OJT. Good base and fine area to raise a family.

I can't believe the ruins of a most wonderful station. I agree the administration was a little to be desired as a young airman who experienced a horrific incident, they did nothing for my mental health. The hospital doctors almost killed me as they informed me I was constipated and in all actuality I was PG. I did have the time of my life there and it was an experience for a young lady with no military backing, I did well! All who lived there from 1984 to 1989, give me a shout out, let me know you are well. Ami Nielsen

I was stationed at George 1967-1968 as an Air Traffic Controller. Met my wife there, married 45 years. Always loved the Victorville area. Visited a few years ago, sad to see it's current state.

I was stationed at George from Jan 1981 to Nov 1982. I was assigned to the 335th AGS in the 21st AMU on the flight line. I was a crew chief on F-4E 66-0258. This was the same aircraft that I was crew chief on at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base from 1973 to 1974. I loved George and still feel that they should have kept it open. Perfect weather for pilots to train at. They should have closed down some arm pit base and left George open. My last time there was a TDY from Hill AFB in 1990.

I came to the base December, 1956. I was a small arms firing instructor. I taught base defense to all airman and qualified pilots going on tdy. I still live in Victorville.

Was there just for F4 training. 1981. But while I was there an F4 crashed NE of the base up in the hills close by. I remember all of what was left was brought to one of the hangers and layed out for the investigation.

I was stationed at George AFB from 1956-1960 as a weapons mechanic on F-100D's. One of our CO's was Gen. Chuck Yeager, with the 1st Fighter Day Squadron. I lived on base in old wooden barracks that were made during WWll. I took my basic training at Parks Air Force Base, Pleasanton Ca. It was great serving in the Air Force.

It is really sad to see George AFB is such sad condition even though it has long been closed. I was stationed at George in 1968 to 69, working in the Munitions. Back in the day I was an Airman and so never did live on base, in stead We liven in Adlanto Ca in what was reported to be a converted mom and pop Motel which hade a main house wehre the care takers lived and had five small units. Oddly enough I have fond mdmories of my time living in adlanto and being stationed at george.

I was stationed at GAFB in 1959-60, and was assigned to the 479th C.A.M.S. (Consoliodated Aircraft Maintence Squadron), maintence docks. Msgt. Riley Beach was my dock chief. Anyone who was also assigned to 479th C.A.M.S. (engine shop or maint. docks) during this time period, please contact me at thomassmith@windstream.net. I was at George AFB from Jan until October 1951 A friend and I were in the hospital there. He was from Bishop, CA and we still keep contact with each other. He was in the Air Guard from Reno. I lived in the wooden barracks near the PX and gas station intersection. I worked in the wooden photo lab but not the building in pictured. It and the CO's headquarters had AC. I live in Vicksburg, MS

I WAS ON GEORGE FROM 1975 TO 1979. I FLEW INTO GEORGE A FEW WEEKS AGO TO TAKE A LOOK. IT WAS A GREAT TRIP DOWN MEMMORY LANE, BUT WAS A REAL SHAME TO SEE IT IN IT CURRANT CONDITION. BUT IT WAS STIL A GREAT FEELING TO SHOOT AN APPROACH INTO THE OLD BASE EVEN IF IT WAS IN A PIPER.
