The Homestead Act of 1862

Mormon Row settlement
The US Homestead Act which was signed by President Lincoln in 1862, encouraged Western migration
by providing the settlers 160 acres of public land. The registration fee was just $15.
The homestead settlers were required to build a dwelling on their ranch and cultivate the land for 5 years.
After that period the land was permanently theirs. These were not easy five years. The arid land,
freezing winter temperatures, and isolation in a wilderness, were huge challenge for the settlers. Many of them quit.

The Grand Tetons area is one of the Homestead Act locations in the US.
The remaining cabins and remnants tell the story of these homesteaders.
