Del Monte Airfield, Bukidnon - US Air Force Far East (USAFFE)

This site marks the location of the Del Monte Airfield in Mindanao. Photos in various directions around show no trace of the airfield through which an unpaved road now runs. Instead the field is surrounded by a papaya plantation & chicken farm

After escaping on PT boat from Corregidor, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, together with his family and staff were evacuated from this field to Australia on March 17, 1942. He declared, ". . . I shall return!"

In WWII the field served as a strategic B-17 & P-40 staging point for the remaining USAFFE until May 1942.

Hi Keith, thank you for the correction. I have added a close-up photo of the Historic Marker for Del Monte Airfield and photos of the surrounding area as of the time I took the photos.

What an important historical information this is. Thank you. I grew up in Cagayan de Oro and I love Bukidnon. I hope I can visit this particular marker soon.
