Borobudur is an ancient Buddhist monument in Central Java, near Yogyakarta. Built around the beginning of the ninth century A.D., it was intended as a teaching tool for visiting pilgrims, illustrating Buddhist mythology with the carved stone panels and statues which line the ten levels of this enormous complex.
