Kyoto Station 京都駅

Completed in 1997, the Kyoto Station is the second largest train station building in Japan (after Nagoya). Designed by Hiroshi Hara 原広司, this modern edifice contrasts greatly with the ancient cultural sites of the city. In addition to being the transport hub of Kyoto, it houses a shopping mall, a hotel, theaters, and an Isetan 伊勢丹 Department Store. Its most striking architectural feature is the grand staircase 大階段 (Daikaidan) on the western end with 171 steps. Rather than being walked on, it is mostly used as an amphitheater for public gatherings.

We had lunch in the Ichiba Coji 市場小路 on the 9th floor of the Isetan 伊勢丹, which gave us a great introductory view of the city.
