Patmos is a small island of 13 square miles. Its fame came from the New Testament book of Revelation, which was written by Apostle John while in exile on this island. At the top is the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian (Agios Ioannis Theologos), which was founded here in 1088 by Ossios Christodoulos with authorization from Emperor Alexios I Komnenos. The monastery was built like a fortress to defense against pirates. Clusters around the monastery is the town of Chora, the island's capital and its largest settlement. |
Further downhill is the Cave of the Apocalypse, where John saw his visions and wrote the book of Revelation. |
The island is shape like a dumbbell. At its narrow middle is Skala, its port. |
