Nice is a major city on the French Riviera. Since the 15th century, Nice was part of the Duchy of Savoy, which was squeezed between France and Italy. In 1860, the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia ceded Savoy to France in exchange for support for Italian unification. Since then, Nice has been the center of the "playground of the rich" that stretches from Cannes to Monaco.
