Church of Spilled Blood

The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood or Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ was built on the site where the popular Czar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. Construction started in 1883 with funds from the imperial family. Instead of following the city’s westward looking Baroque and Neoclassical styles, it resembles Medieval Russian architecture with onion domes and lots of mosaics.
