"Dead" Western Hog-nosed Snake

(Heterodon nasicus)

Here is the same snake (see http://www.pbase.com/pegsam/image/82762692) that went into its secondary defense mode of feigning death (the primary mode of defense
is to slither away from a threat). I really wasn't going to bother it beyond trying to get it to pose for a nice picture, and certainly wasn't going to pick it up after
it was "dead" because it also vented on itself during the "death" process. If you look closely you can see its tongue hanging out on the white underside of the lower coil.
