Weathered Color

Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, Coconino County, AZ view map

The multi-colored layers in the sandstone is a fascinating piece of geology. The colors here are
pretty much true-to-life and are a result of various minerals deposited and collected by sand millions
of years ago. It was amazing to see the theme of red, yellow, maroon, and purple repeated in may of
the areas we visited (from S. Nevada all the way to NE Arizona). This was shot at Cottonwood Cove
in Coyote Buttes South. A BLM permit was required to hike in this wilderness area.
This is a merge of five exposures for HDR.

An astounding shot! It would be wonderful to see this in real life, but your gorgeous photo is a good stand in for the real thing. Terrific work. VV
