Prior to closing the doors and locking them with a key (con chiave: Italian for "with a key," in English, "conclave"), the crowd on St. Peter's Square was able to view on jumbo screens the individual oathtaking of each cardinal elector. Here a cardinal elector is placing his hand on the gospel of Matthew in the 16th chapter ("And I also say unto thee That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.") and affirming his oath, according to church law and in keeping with centuries of tradition.
