Castel Sant Angelo. Built as the mausoleum for the emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century A.D., it has served as a fortress in defense of Rome and later as a sumptuous papal palace. Subterranean passageways connect the fortress to the Vatican. At various times in history, popes have retreated to the Castel Sant Angelo when the Vatican came under attack.
