Used in motion pictures as the "establishing shot" to unmistakably place the action in London, the Clock Tower of Westminster Palace is one of the most recognized structures in the world. Often referred to as Big Ben, the tower itself does not technically bear that name. Big Ben refers to the 13 1/2-ton hour bell within the tower that is sounded at the top of every hour. The bell is named in honor of Sir Benjamin Hall, a British civil engineer, politician and Member of Parliament who oversaw the latter stages of the rebuilding of Westminster Palace following the fire of 1834.
