County of Wiltshire, England

The builders of Stonehenge left no written record. But clues to its construction can be seen today. The vertical stone on the right of the frame shows the tenon of a mortise and tenon joint commonly used in woodworking. The tenon extends from the top of the standing stone and inserts into the mortise of the lintel stone that would lay on top. This type of joint holds the lintel (top, horizontal stone) in place on top of the standing stone.
