My first job as a teen was working at Alexander's in the Millinery Department back in the 1970s. I lived on 183rd Street and the Grand Concourse and went to Elizabeth Barrett Browning (EBB)which became PS 9. It was also an all girls Jr. High School. Those were happy times. Wish I could find my old friends but it was a lifetime ago...

Our laundry man was a Mr.Farkas. That was when we lived in the Amalgamated building across from DeWitt Clinton HS. That was in the mid-forties. I it possible that he was from the same family that owned Alexander's?

We lived on Tremont Ave. until 1955 when we moved to Bayside Queens (aka "the country"). I have vivid memories of my mom taking us to Alexanders for our back-to-school clothes shopping. Does anyone remember Ms. Berger our 3rd grade teacher in PS 64?

Does anyone remember a Department store called Albrecht's which I think was near RKO theater? I tried looking up the history on that store on Google, but found nothing.

My friends and I used to either take the 12 bus or walk all the way from White Plains Road to Alexanders to buy single records. It was probably the place I bought the first Beatles single in the US "I Wanna Hold Your Hand." And many, many others.

This is so incredible to see again. In the '60's I would walk from the Fordham University vacinity to the Grand Concourse and to Alexander's to window shop. I was a 16 year old teenager and this was a fantastic escape & a brisk walk from my 617 Fordham Road apartment. My most vivid memory was the "blackout". I was in Alexander's when all the lights went out in NY. It was so dark. I barely made it out of the store without tumbling. All I saw was the car & bus lights. It was so glad to hop on the bus and make it home safely. It was something, definitely a NY experience. I know I stayed closer to home after that. I walked to Arthur Avenue. Italian Food heaven! Somehow I purchased a cannoli from Egido's Pastry Shop and said a "thank you" Hail Mary in Our Lady Of Mt Carmel Church. Thanks for all these sweet memories.

I worked at Krum's during high school (BX Science class of '70) I remember I had a crush on Caryl Oris and whenever she would come to Krum's I went out of my way to wait on her.
We would ride the Concourse bus home together and stand on the corner of Creston and 183rd and talk for what seemed hours.

Alexander's is not there. I missed that dept.store. Fordham rd don't look like the old times. Lots and Lots of people. Like before yea! not the whole world is there. Guards outside of the stores..one can still find bargains.

hello,my name is tommy farkas, and with my family, opened the original Krum's with the help of my uncle george farkas, who, with his four son's created a monster, that collapsed under his feet, because, people in the bronx wanted to pay on lay away, which the store wouldn't offer under state laws.Otherwise all seven Alexander's would still be triving.

I enlisted in the USMC in 1948 at that recruiting station "over the tunnel." In 1969, after having retired from the USMC, and while working at Dollar Savings, I again visited & spoke with active duty Marines in that office. Big surprise when one of those recruiting Marines was an old buddy of mine that I had served with for many years at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

When I was a young boy less than ten years old, Mom always took me to Alexanders for their "Foot Guider" shoes. Boy were they ugly. But I had no say in the matter.

Sorry don't know of George Farkas and him starting Alexanders Department store. I do recall it being sold to Caldors department store. Now the building is a branch of the University of New York Concourse Division, Baily Fitness Center, A Health Clinic, P.C. Richards... etc. I also recall my grand mother going to Alexanders for bargins... and one time got a "Jay Walking" ticket (so there went the bargin she had). Further, the military recruitment building right over the tunnel at the GC and Fordam is still there
as well. And Sears on Webster and Fordham is being renovated and will house Sears, Best Buy and other big name retails stores. And just a 10 minute walk from this location is Arthur Avenue and the Italian section.. which is thriving and a great place eat at some classy restaurants and just walk around. Recall, shallet roushes and egg clares. Oh,oh
Krums moved out 20 years or so ago to I think Nyack, NJ, Shipmens Stationary store is still on the GC but several blocks south of their former location.. and Jahns Ice Cream Parlor.. who knows... gone forever.
