if you are using Photoshop CS3 or CS4 , in adjustments use the highlight/shadow button and adjust about 12% in the shadows only ...........you will be pleased and amazed at the result............it is the standard first adjustment that we pros use ....the second adjustment would be your curve..........then do whatever you want after that.
