I was lucky enough to be able to sit in the locomotive and watch the wood being put into the burner. When he opened the door to the burner, I could see the red hot fire below! Each shove of wood into the burner had to be done carefully; the burner was opened, the wood was shoved in, and the burner was quickly closed. It's amazing when you think about it that this was done repeatedly in order for a wood burning steam locomotive to run. A very labor intensive operation! I was glad they allowed me to sit inside the locomotive and watch. Thank you Sumpter Valley Railroad!
