Devaneri after tsunami

Devaneri

A nostalgique shot taken at the fishermen-village of Devaneri near Mamallapuram (Chennai-South-India) just after the tsunami.

The boat, they had pulled in the center of the village to prevent to loose this one too. With this kind of polyester boat, that I invested in once, I went fishing with the Devaneri fisherman at night, the whole night through. I remember at a certain moment they took their tiffan and started to eat at midnight, terrible, almost had to throw up by the smell of food, it was cold, dark and the boat was dancing all the time on the waves, I went to sleep without food. Next morning by pulling in the net, we noticed that a trailer had cut 1/3 of the almost 1500 meter net. Bad luck. Also the catch of the kingfish was rather down. OK next time better.

In the center, the temple or kovil. In front the hall where on special meetings all the fishermen gathers with their president of the village to discus urgent matters, I was allowed to assist. Just beside on the right of this temple you see the first kakhus or small bathroom of the village that we build together with Pitchai for his family.

The water of the tsunami came as high as the wall, you see the mark still on the paint of the house next to it. Most of the fishermen did still sleep out of the village in tents more land inwards, a lot of work had to be done to clean up their houses again. I stayed almost 2 months in Pitchai's house when the bathroom was finished. A fine nostalgique remembrance, quite some set back for them, this tsunami.
