Inner court around the Sanctuorum

Madurai

After her kolam, she goes to school taking a shortcut through the inner court of the Meenakshi Temple. Here it is calm and peacefull and you can avoid the fuzz of traffic jam just outside the walls. You see the smaller Gopurams inside, the smaller the elder they are. In very old temples they builded the sanctuorum high up, like in Tanjore.

The Western artists see nature with his eyes and judges art by intellectual and aesthetic standards. The Indian seeks truth in his inner consciousness, and judges of its expression by metaphysical and imaginative standards. Art for him is not to please, but to manifest."

That's the key to understand Indian art.
I am asking myself why the red vertical lines on the walls of the Meenakshi ? Is it a way to point at the univers of Gods ? And why the red horizontal line on top .... indicating 4 parts of a religious year ?
