Emigrant Wilderness

The Emigrant Wilderness is named after the miners and settlers who first used this area as a route over the Sierras following the discovery of gold in California more than 150 years ago. The elevation of this part of the Sierra ranges from about 5,000ft to 11,500ft. After hiking in this area, it's hard to imagine that families traveling in fully loaded wagons were able to successfully traverse this rugged landscape in a time long before any trails or roads were constructed.
