School's out for good! - faranya
by

Pleasant Valley, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia - needless to say, it's been many years since the last child bounded over this doorsill and into the single schoolroom beyond. The building is occasionally used as a community hall and still boasts its ancient woodstove and tiny wooden stage, where long-ago concerts were held.

I like this photo and its short colour palette. I like too the clean composition that centers our attention in the most important, the door. endika

I'm with Shirley, just lovin' this shot and I don't mind the bit of perspective. (It might've come out a bit crisper at about f6 or 7, though.)

Brenda, I really love the textures and the wonderful red door! I was reading a comment from another person, either on one of the gallery shots or in a thread on the forum about some photographer that did nothing but a study in peeling paint. Oh he would have loved your photograph Brenda! You know, we might grow tired of the snow and wish for spring and its flowers but this shot could not have compared to this if taken in the summer. The snow tipped little pine and the white ground to accent the white washed siding is just great!

Here is an exercise for you, any object as a subject will do and don’t worry about colour balance. Find a room with lots of lights or move some extra in. Put the camera on a tripod and in M for manual. Set the shutter speed to 1/125 or there about, set the ISO to 100 then vary the aperture (f-stop) through 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16 taking a shot at each setting and see what you get. Then vary the lighting, perhaps switch one strong source off or on and repeat.

You can vary the exercise by keeping the aperture the same and varying the shutter speed, then change to strong side lighting and so on. By the time you have spent an hour or so doing this, you will fully understand the relationship between aperture , shutter speed and exposure for a given amount of light.

Oh, make sure your tripod feet aren’t muddy, I got told off yesterday :-)

Thanks, Brent and Colin. I shot this from the road in front of the schoolhouse, which sits on a rise elevated above it somewhat. I thought I was straight across from the door but can see I wasn't. :( The door itself is also a bit crooked in its frame after so many years.

I've just started to use S mode. I set it to that and let the camera choose the aperture. But I know zip about these numbers as yet so I'll go back to the drawing board and try to figure out what works, when, and how. I need a book on Settings for Dummies, don't I?

Your input is very helpful to me. That's why I enter these challenges; I always get such useful advice and each time, I learn something more than I knew beforehand.

Ah, brent got there first!
I really like the textures and tones, but do agree it would be better if shot square-on, maybe with a slightly wider angle level with the middle of the door.
I don't think you needed f22 either :-)

Funny title - nice textures and gradations of color. If you are interested, in PS you can correct perspective by selecting the whole pict and and using Edit->Transform-> (Distort or Perspective). Good shot BJ!
